At the age of 18, Henry took over our class at Kaunakakai Elementary School after the previous teacher from the mainland quit and went home. Us local kids saw a weak spot and attacked. Needless to say, all changed quickly when Mr. Alau arrived. He was quick to straighten things out but more importantly, he made an indelible impact on all of us, teaching discipline and leadership. Most recently I had an opportunity to work with Maile and met Henry again after 50+ years. It was great to again meet a man who made such an impact to our lives. From another US Air Force retiree, Mahalo Henry for being in my life. To the Alau family, please accept my wife Charlene and my sincere condolences for the loss of a man who has touched so many throughout his whole life.
